This book is written by Josh Bryant, who is one of, if not the best bench press coach of all time. The book covers a wide range of bench press exercise variations and training techniques specifically to increase the raw bench press and gives evidence-based explanations for why they should be expected to work. The book is relatively short and light reading but is packed with lots of very promising ideas to try.

Most of the techniques described in the book are largely targeted at increasing neuromuscular efficiency as opposed to growing more muscle mass, though some of the suggested exercises probably work as excellent mass builders as well. If you're looking for a training program to use or advice on how to design your training program, this book does not go into these topics, but it does give good suggestions for things that you can incorporate into your existing training program.

The material in this book is likely to be more useful for advanced and elite bench pressers. That said though, beginner and intermediate lifters can probably benefit from suggestions this book as well, but focusing on the basics and just generally getting on an effective program will be far more valuable for them. The ideas in the book largely are targeted towards getting ready to move as much weight as possible and peaking than they are to generally building muscle and generating long term increases in strength.

Josh Bryant in "Bench Press" The Science" has written an excellent book for advanced bench pressers and their coaches. The rudiments of bench pressing are not in this book. This is a review of scientific articles on bench pressing. Josh gives us a summary of many articles on bench pressing, and practical take home tips they suggest. Leading up to the articles are fascinating discussions of "raw" lifting vs "bench press shirt" lifting, a history of both raw and shirt bench press records clear back into the 1800's, Josh's comments and results of interveiws with several elite bench pressers, and discussions of bench press controversies with the input of Josh himself, and several other elite bench pressers.

Josh is well qualified to write this book, having long experience in gyms, training all sorts of clients, and specializing in elite bench press coaching, having coached several world record holders in bench press. Josh himself holds the record of the youngest to bench press over 600 lbs.

The information in this book is a distillation of Josh's experience and reading. As such it is a collection of coaching and training techniques unmatched elsewhere. For help on improving your clients' elite bench press, this is an invaluable book with hundreds of techniques, tips and suggestions, many matched with a scientific article reference.

That said, this book is not a guide to the art of coaching or training the elite bench press. This is a techniques and tricks list which should be utilized by experienced coaches and trainers who understand the progressions necessary for elite bench pressing. As such this book is truly outstanding.

I love how there are clear references to journal papers and experiments.

Format is a brief description of the experiment and results followed by practical implications for training. Doesn't bore you with any unnecessary information.

I would give 5 stars if there were more pictures to show what certain terms mean, eg. Names of certain exercise variations, equipment, etc.

Excellent book on bench pressing. Bryant nails this out of the park. If you want bench pressing knowledge, this is the most comprehensive book I’ve ever read on the subject! Bryant himself is highly intelligent and I could tell he took special care creating something that’s value exceeds the cost.

I’ve bench pressed 821lbs weighing 275lbs in the IPF.

nice book for lifters\coaches with some experience\knowledge, covers all kinds of studies and researches about the bench, tips and training methods.
lacks coverage of technique but nice book for the price(10$).
would recommend it along with deadlift by andy bolton and monster squat by joe ironman to put it all together.

First off I'm 9 weeks into my training cycle with Josh and I have set huge PRs in the squat bench and deadlift. This book is imcredible. I have many books on the bench press (since it's been my nemesis) and it is by the far the best I've ever read. Very clear and to the point with science backing everything. This book is worth way more than is being charged. It may sound over the top but I feel like I have finally found the secret to a huge bench by reading this book and applying it to my training. In 9 weeks I did 3 reps with my original 1 rep max.

The book is extremely instrumental for any person looking to break some PRs. Even without an elite bench that may require extra tools such as deadbench, the book provides useful tips and explains WHY to use them. The "why" portion really builds the intuition needed to actually want to implement said tips into one's training.

5.0 out of 5 stars Game Changer!!! "Bench Press Bible"
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 15, 2017
I initially came across this book on some forum. Where Eric Spoto called it the "Bench Press Bible" Which definetly sparked my intrest in it. After reading some of the brief reviews I figured I would buy it because it's dirt cheap and no matter how hard I've been researching Bench I couldn't seem to get my bench to increase.

The book is seperated into different topics. Some of which are

CAT Training- Which is a HUGE! Benefit and he goes into extreme detail with.

Isometrics- Which again is also a MASSIVE Benefit

    PAP Effect-

    Bench Press Specfic Plyometrics-

Building Explosive Power Off The Chest- Which to be honest is the basis of the whole book

    Acessories

    Bands and chains

    Stretch Reflex

This book is a game changer I cannot stress this enough it will not only change your whole perception of Bench but other lifts as well. I am now implementing the majority of the stuff in this book into my squat and deadlift programming as well. Get this book!!!!
